Eighty-eight years ago today.

On this date, August 26, 1920, the 19th ammendment was ratified.

Nineteenth Amendment (Amendment XIX) to the United States Constitution prohibits each of the states and the federal government from denying any citizen the right to vote because of that citizen's sex.


"The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.

Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation"

History

The Nineteenth Amendment was specifically intended to extend suffrage to women. It was proposed on June 4, 1919 and ratified on August 18, 1920.

The Nineteenth Amendment was the culmination of the work of many activists in favor of women's suffrage. One such group called the Silent Sentinels protested in front of the White House for 18 months starting in 1917 to raise awareness of the issue.

On January 9, 1918, President Woodrow Wilson announced his support of the amendment. The next day, the House of Representatives narrowly passed the amendment but the Senate refused to even debate it until October. When the Senate voted on the amendment in October, it failed by three votes.[1]

In response, the National Woman's Party urged citizens to vote against anti-suffrage senators up for election in the fall of 1918. After the 1918 election, most members of Congress were pro-suffrage. On May 21, 1919, the House of Representatives passed the amendment by a vote of 304 to 89, and 2 weeks later on June 4, the Senate finally followed, where the amendment passed by a vote of 56 to 25.[2]

It was ratified on August 18, 1920, upon its ratification by Tennessee, the thirty-sixth state to do so. Secretary of State Bainbridge Colby certified the ratification on August 26, 1920.

On February 27, 1922, a challenge to the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment was rebuffed by the Supreme Court of the United States in Leser v. Garnett.

The State Fair.........

We went to the great Minnesota get together today!

We usually go once each year, but some years we didn't go at all.

Our son is old enough now to enjoy the many activities and animals and food there now.

Our daughter also joined us so that was fun too. Little guy loves big sister and they even went down the big slide together.

I used to go down the big slide with daughter when she was little. They had a blast and we have video of it all.

We also went an saw the animals. This year we saw cows, pigs, piglets, chickens, ducks ducklings, rabbits, turkeys and baby turkeys. Oh yes, the sheep too. One year a sheep bleated very loudly at my son and it scared him.

The little guy didn't care for cheese curds!!!! We thought for sure he would like them this year but nope.

Then he walked by a place that had hamburgers and hot dogs and sat down and ordered a hot dog. Daughter and I continued on and the husband stayed with little guy and ate.

We all met up just a little later and continued on.

We all had a good time and are tired!!

August blankets

They will be donated to a hospital for babies in NICU.

I have no idea why they are sideways and I can't fix it!

History of the Hymn

Horatio Gates Spafford
1828-1888
Born: October 20, 1828, North Troy, New York.
Died: October 16, 1888, Jerusalem, Israel, of malaria.


This hymn was written by a Chicago lawyer, Horatio G. Spafford. You might think to write a worship song titled,
'It is well with my soul', you would indeed have to be a rich, successful Chicago lawyer. But the words,
"When sorrows like sea billows roll ... It is well with my soul”, were not written during the happiest period of
Spafford's life. On the contrary, they came from a man who had suffered almost unimaginable personal tragedy.

Horatio G. Spafford and his wife, Anna, were pretty well-known in 1860’s Chicago. And this was not just because
of Horatio's legal career and business endeavors. The Spaffords were also prominent supporters and close
friends of D.L. Moody, the famous preacher. In 1870, however, things started to go wrong. The Spaffords' only
son was killed by scarlet fever at the age of four. A year later, it was fire rather than fever that struck. Horatio
had invested heavily in real estate on the shores of Lake Michigan. In 1871, every one of these holdings was
wiped out by the great Chicago Fire.

Aware of the toll that these disasters had taken on the family, Horatio decided to take his wife and four
daughters on a holiday to England. And, not only did they need the rest -- DL Moody needed the help. He was
traveling around Britain on one of his great evangelistic campaigns. Horatio and Anna planned to join Moody in
late 1873. And so, the Spaffords traveled to New York in November, from where they were to catch the French
steamer 'Ville de Havre' across the Atlantic. Yet just before they set sail, a last-minute business development
forced Horatio to delay. Not wanting to ruin the family holiday, Spafford persuaded his family to go as planned.
He would follow on later. With this decided, Anna and her four daughters sailed East to Europe while Spafford
returned West to Chicago. Just nine days later, Spafford received a telegram from his wife in Wales. It read:
"Saved alone."

On November 2nd 1873, the 'Ville de Havre' had collided with 'The Lochearn', an English vessel. It sank in only
12 minutes, claiming the lives of 226 people. Anna Spafford had stood bravely on the deck, with her daughters
Annie, Maggie, Bessie and Tanetta clinging desperately to her. Her last memory had been of her baby being
torn violently from her arms by the force of the waters. Anna was only saved from the fate of her daughters by a
plank which floated beneath her unconscious body and propped her up. When the survivors of the wreck had
been rescued, Mrs. Spafford's first reaction was one of complete despair. Then she heard a voice speak to her,
"You were spared for a purpose." And she immediately recalled the words of a friend, "It's easy to be grateful
and good when you have so much, but take care that you are not a fair-weather friend to God."

Upon hearing the terrible news, Horatio Spafford boarded the next ship out of New York to join his bereaved
wife. Bertha Spafford (the fifth daughter of Horatio and Anna born later) explained that during her father's
voyage, the captain of the ship had called him to the bridge. "A careful reckoning has been made", he said, "and
I believe we are now passing the place where the de Havre was wrecked. The water is three miles deep." Horatio
then returned to his cabin and penned the lyrics of his great hymn.

The words which Spafford wrote that day come from 2 Kings 4:26. They echo the response of the Shunammite
woman to the sudden death of her only child. Though we are told "her soul is vexed within her", she still
maintains that 'It is well." And Spafford's song reveals a man whose trust in the Lord is as unwavering as hers
was.

It would be very difficult for any of us to predict how we would react under circumstances similar to those
experienced by the Spaffords. But we do know that the God who sustained them would also be with us.

No matter what circumstances overtake us may we be able to say with Horatio Spafford...

Garmin

This is Garmin. Garmin is a GPS for driving directions.

I am pretty good with directions and I don't really need Garmin around here.

My husband bought Garmin last year and we have used it a handful of times.

My Mom and I took a quick trip to her hometown.

I have driven this road to her hometown hundreds of times, but my husband had me bring Garmin with.

We both got a laugh from Garmin when we veered off the directed path.

To both of us it sounded like Garmin was exasperated that we went off path.

It would say in the robotic, exasperated voice "recalculating" to give us a new direction.

We looked at the house she was born in and a house where she lived with her family.

The owner of her home was gracious enough to let my mom and me into the house to look around.

My mom told the owner how the house looked when mom lived there. The owner was interested in hearing how the house used to be.

It was a good, quick trip and my mom is glad to have gone and that I brought her.

It brought back a lot of memories for both of us. Some sad and most of them good fun, family memories.

We will likely never go back to this town since we have no family left there.

Another red scarf

Another red scarf finished.

I am taking a break from scarves for a little bit but I think I have 3 or 4 left to make.

This one is made with Red Heart, Cherry red. It is 6 inches wide by 78 inches long.

It's a long one!!!

Thankful Thursday

Another Thursday is here. Summer is almost over. It's gone by so quickly too.

That makes me sad.

Elderberries

We have two Elderberry plants on our property and they are ripe.

They look very similar to Blueberries but they are more red and they are tart.

I knew we had berries around but I didn't know they were Elderberries until now.

I plan on making an elderberry pie when I get home.

Flowers...........

This is a picture of fuscia.

Each mother's day I get at least two hanging baskets with Fuscia in them.

The hummingbirds love them.

We also have Honeysuckle vines, petunias and many many other flowers and shrubs and vines.

They are all for attracting hummingbirds and butterflies, and bees. And it works.

We have a ton of hummingbirds around.

But what is best about them all, is the SMELL!!!!

When I walk out my front door I can smell all the flowers and it is a beautiful aroma to walk into!!

Road Trip...........

My mom and I are going on a short road trip later this week.

Mom wants to travel to her hometown to see the house she was born in and where she lived, and I volunteered to drive her.

It's a relatively short drive with an overnight stay.

We are also going to drive by my grandma's old house. I haven't been there since 1999.

Just me and mom. This is the first time I have left my boy overnight.

I think it will be a bittersweet visit. Probably the last time I ever go to this city.

August Blankets..........

This is what I have done for blankets this month. Seems I have been busy with scarves mostly.

These are five small baby blankets. The average size is 16 inches wide by 19 inches long.

Some are smaller, some bigger.

They are all made with Homespun yarn.

They will be donated to a hospital for babies in NICU.

The darker color you see on the pink blanket and the one next to it is a deep, dark purple, thought it looks black in the photo.

It's made with Homespun baby in Carnation. I call it pink!!

It is 15 inches by 17 and a half inches.

Made in a simple shell stitch.

Grandma.........

Today marks the 100th birthday of my sweet grandma.

She passed away in 2005, about six months before her 97th birthday.

Grandma was a special person in my life. We were always very close.

In 2004 we brought my son to see her. We have several pictures of them together.

I miss grandma and think of her often.

Thankful for my memories.

Thankful Thursday

Another Thursday here. I have enjoyed this week. It's been a quiet week.

My daughter came over one day and it was a nice visit. My little guy just adores big sister. It's good to see them together.

This week I am thankful for:

* my husband, he has been home for a week and he is so good with our son.
* my little guy, he hurt his leg this week and it's a little tender for him.
* for my little guy giving spontaneous hugs and kisses. I know it won't last forever.
* my garden and starting to get some yummy veggies
* God's grace and mercy, because I need it each day
