Killing Fields

I just finished reading this book yesterday and watched this movie last night.

Both were wonderful and I recommend watching the movie and reading the book.

Haing S. Ngor played Dith Pran in the movie. They had similar experiences in Cambodia during this time. They became close friends after they made it to the US.

Both the movie and the book made me sad and I cried. What a horrible experience for them both and all of their countrymen.

Squares

These are two 10 inch Granny squares made for a charity for an afghan. They get squares from many people then put together a blanket for charity or someone special.

It's one great thing about my crochet board. If I want to do something easy in between projects, I can just look under the charity section and see what's there.

These squares are made with Red Heart and the color is Cafe.

These squares are going to a members brother in law who is very ill.

It's out of control...

I can't help it.

I bought more yarn. It was on sale for a good price. I don't need more yarn. I was finally getting my stock worked down a bit.

But lately I haven't been crocheting as much. I've been needle pointing and doing small crochet projects for charity.

The yarn pile has taken over the extra room now. There's yarn piled everywhere with a narrow path between colors. It's bordering on obnoxious. My husband was looking for some headphones and thought maybe they were buried up there somewhere. If it gets any worse, I could be trapped when the yarn pile collapses and the fire department will be digging me out.

It will all be used, no doubt about that. Eventually.

In a recent conversation with the hubby, I told him I didn't need to buy any more yarn for a while.

I even admitted I had a LOT of yarn....

Thankful Thursday

Today Laurie has chosen deserved rewards as our theme.

I'm not really sure what to say about this subject other than God knows what we deserve and what we don't deserve and he never gets it wrong!

Today I am thankful for:
*warm weather
*swim lessons
*my two children
*reconnecting with long ago friends
*my husband for working so hard for us

Butterflies.....

These are butterflies I made for the Holocaust Museum Houston.

There are eleven altogether and they are made with Red Heart scrap yarn. They are super easy to make too. They measure about 5 inches across and 4 inches tall.

RIP

RIP Ed McMahon.

I always enjoyed the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and Ed McMahon. He was a wonderful sidekick to Johnny.

I have vivid memories, of when I was young in the 70's, of watching The Tonight Show with my Grandma when we went to visit. We laughed a lot and at a young age, some of the more racy jokes went over my head.

First day of Summer!

This is the first whole day of summer. It's hot and humid here and my husband put in the air conditioners yesterday!! I am so glad.

We don't have many plans for the summer. We are not taking a vacation this year.

The little guy has swim lessons through out the summer and T ball will last til mid August probably.

There are some birthdays in July too.

I'll be driving my mom down to Illinois again this summer. She wants to visit some more places.

Other than that not too much happening.

A quote

Don't let the past be a hitching post--but rather, let it be a guidepost!!

Memory Verse Week 25

Proverbs 13:20 (New International Version)

He who walks with the wise grows wise,
but a companion of fools suffers harm.

Wow, I like this verse a lot!!!

Happy Fathers day!

For my husband and the daddy to my children. Happy Fathers Day!!!

What Makes a Dad
God took the strength of a mountain,
The majesty of a tree,
The warmth of a summer sun,
The calm of a quiet sea,
The generous soul of nature,
The comforting arm of night,
The wisdom of the ages,
The power of the eagle's flight,
The joy of a morning in spring,
The faith of a mustard seed,
The patience of eternity,
The depth of a family need,
Then God combined these qualities,
When there was nothing more to add,
He knew His masterpiece was complete,
And so, He called it ... Dad

Finally finished!!!!

I finally finished the Leprosy bandage I started so long ago. WOW, I can hardly believe it was over a YEAR ago that I thought of starting this project.

It ended up being about 4 inches wide and 42 inches long. I used a D hook and #10 cotton thread. This is also the first time I have ever worked with thread.

I have to admit, it seemed more like a chore to finish this bandage. The hook is small and the cotton thread is even smaller. My eyes aren't what they used to be either so it was a difficult task. I want to make another one since I have the thread for it but I will use an E hook next time.

Read the three posts below for more background info on this project.

And this thread.

I used the Ecru on the right hand side.

And finally, this one.

Thankful Thursday

Today we have had some strange weather. I am thankful for the sun and warmer weather. I was getting tired of the rain.

Today our host Laurie chosen "Your fathers eyes" for our theme today.

I actually have my fathers eyes!!! My four brothers have blue eyes and I have my fathers brown eyes. My little guy has my brown eyes too.

My dad is no longer here but I wish he was since I have a ton of questions for him, things I didn't think to ask when he was alive.

Today I am thankful for Gods eyes that are on all of us all the time. I am thankful for such a father to look out for me.

I am also thankful for:
*hot sunny days and air conditioning
*my husband who is the best husband and daddy!!
*fresh food
*fresh air

God loves fathers. He is one.

Happy 234th Birthday!!

Today the United States Army celebrates its 234 th Birthday!

Army info

Two hundred and thirty-four years ago, the United States Army was established to defend our Nation. From the Revolutionary War to the Global War on Terror, our Soldiers remain Army Strong with a deep commitment to our core values and beliefs. This 234th birthday commemorates America’s Army – Soldiers, Families and Civilians – who are achieving a level of excellence that is truly Army Strong both here and abroad. Their willingness to sacrifice to build a better future for others and to preserve our way of life is without a doubt, the Strength of our Nation.

Carl

I bought some Carl books when I first got married in anticipation of more children. My daughter was sort of too big for them at the time, but I feel in love with these books.

I have recently been reading them with the little guy. They have very few words, so each time the story is just a little different!! And the little guy has started adding his thoughts on the stories as we tell them.

There have been some new Carl books written since I bought the other ones and I have ordered them since they are so fun to read with the little guy.

I would definitely recommend these books to anyone with smaller children. They are fun to read, and make up parts of the story!!

Just look at any book seller under Alexandra Day. They are truly wonderful books!

Memory Verse Week 24

Proverbs 13:10 (New International Version)

10 Pride only breeds quarrels,
but wisdom is found in those who take advice.

Flag day

Happy Flag day!!

I posted about Flag day last year too. You can read that post here
Look here for more info

When : Always June 14th

Flag Day, is a day for all Americans to celebrate and show respect for our flag, its designers and makers. Our flag is representative of our independence and our unity as a nation.....one nation, under God, indivisible. Our flag has a proud and glorious history. It was at the lead of every battle fought by Americans. Many people have died protecting it. It even stands proudly on the surface of the moon.

As Americans, we have every right to be proud of our culture, our nation, and our flag. So raise the flag today and every day with pride!

Properly Display Our Flag

There is a right way and a wrong way to display the flag. The American flag should be held in the highest of regards. It represents our nation and the many people who gave their lives for our country and our flag. Here are the basics on displaying the American flag:

* The flag is normally flown from sunrise to sunset.
* In the morning, raise the flag briskly. At sunset, lower it slowly. Always, raise and lower it ceremoniously.
* The flag should not be flown at night without a light on it.
* The flag should not be flown in the rain or inclement weather.
* After a tragedy or death, the flag is flown at half staff for 30 days. It's called "half staff" on land ,and "half mast" on a ship.
* When flown vertically on a pole, the stars and blue field , or "union", is at the top and at the end of the pole (away from your house).
* The American flag is always flown at the top of the pole. Your state flag and other flags fly below it.
* The union is always on top. When displayed in print, the stars and blue field are always on the left.
* Never let your flag touch the ground, never...period.
* Fold your flag when storing. Don't just stuff it in a drawer or box.
* When your flag is old and has seen better days, it is time to retire it. Old flags should be burned or buried. Please do not throw it in the trash.

Did you Know? There is a very special ceremony for retiring the flag by burning it. It is a ceremony everyone should see.Your local Boy Scout group knows the proper ceremony and performs it on a regular basis. If you have an old flag, give it to them. And, attend the ceremony.

Famous Flag People:

Betsy Ross was a seamstress who made clothes for George Washington. In June, 1776, Washington approached her to make the country's first flag and the rest is history.

Francis Scott Key Inspired by the British bombardment of Fort McHenry, Francis Scott Key penned the lyrics to our national anthem as he witnessed the event as British rockets whizzed in the air while our American Flag flew in the breeze
