I finished this one this afternoon. It's my last May blanket.

It's made with Homespun again--that's my favorite yarn for afghans.

I like how this self stripes.

A bad day today...................

My special special dog Otis died today. That's him in the front kind of curled up.

He was sick very suddenly and I brought him to the vet and he stopped breathing

The vets did what they could but he was gone.

I am so sad. Otis was my buddy. My special dog.

May 30

Four years ago on this day my dear aunt died.

It was very, very sudden. I was shocked.

I had to call my mother and tell her that her little sister was dead.

It seemed so very unreal.

My aunt was taking care of my grandma and we all thought grandma would go first.

We had no idea. None.

It's been four very long, sad years.

I miss my aunt very very much.

A visitor...........

Yes, that is a Raccoon.

And it's been visiting us for the past 3 days or so.

We have a garbage can on our patio that contains our birdseed and apparently the raccoon thinks that is dinner.

This raccoon is BIG. I am thinking at least 30 pounds. It's bigger than my dogs. And it's not afraid of my dogs barking at it up close.

I am not afraid of it either. Maybe it's a mama looking for food.

If that's the case it should visit my compost pile!!

This week I am thankful for many, many things. too many to really list.

*being of one mind with my husband
*baseball
*sunshine streaming through the window in the early morning
*hummingbirds--magnificent creatures. They are incredible.

Long ago when I was young we would visit my grandpa in Indiana. He had a beautiful and very well kept backyard. He had a patio with trellises. Hummingbirds used to visit because he planted flowers they liked. We would sit together and watch the hummingbirds. Fond childhood memories!!

A song

Remember this one??

Three Dog Night

Out in the Country

Whenever I need to leave it all behind
Or feel the need to get away
I find a quiet place, far from the human race
Out in the country

Before the breathing air is gone
Before the sun is just a bright spot in the night-time
Out where the rivers like to run
I stand alone and take back something worth remembering

Whenever I feel them closing in on me
Or need a bit of room to move
When life becomes too fast, I find relief at last
Out in the country

Before the breathing air is gone
Before the sun is just a bright spot in the night-time
Out where the rivers like to run
I stand alone and take back something worth remembering

Before the breathing air is gone
Before the sun is just a bright spot in the night-time
Out where the rivers like to run
I stand alone and take back something worth remembering

Before the breathing air is gone
Before the sun is just a bright spot in the night-time
Out where the rivers like to run
I stand alone and take back something worth remembering

Before the breathing air is gone
Before the sun is just a bright spot in the night-time

May blanket

This is another May blanket that I just finished.

It is 6 feet 2 inches long and 5 feet wide. The red in the afghan is really a deep dark rich red. It's a beautiful red. It looks a bit washed out in the picture though.

The dog is Louie, one of my Jack Russells!

This is the last large Needlepoint that I have to share.

It's another one I did before I got married and it sat in my closet all rolled up!

God Bless The USA

I thought this was appropriate to post for today.

God Bless The U.S.A.

by Lee Greenwood

If tomorrow all the things were gone,
I’d worked for all my life.
And I had to start again,
with just my children and my wife.

I’d thank my lucky stars,
to be livin here today.
‘Cause the flag still stands for freedom,
and they can’t take that away.

And I’m proud to be an American,
where at least I know I’m free.
And I wont forget the men who died,
who gave that right to me.

And I gladly stand up,
next to you and defend her still today.
‘Cause there ain’t no doubt I love this land,
God bless the USA.

From the lakes of Minnesota,
to the hills of Tennessee.
Across the plains of Texas,
From sea to shining sea.

From Detroit down to Houston,
and New York to L.A.
Well there's pride in every American heart,
and its time we stand and say.

That I’m proud to be an American,
where at least I know I’m free.
And I wont forget the men who died,
who gave that right to me.

And I gladly stand up,
next to you and defend her still today.
‘Cause there ain’t no doubt I love this land,
God bless the USA.

And I’m proud to be and American,
where at least I know I’m free.
And I wont forget the men who died,
who gave that right to me.

And I gladly stand up,
next to you and defend her still today.
‘Cause there ain’t no doubt I love this land,
God bless the USA.

Memorial day 2008

Duty. Honor. Country. God.

Today is Memorial day and I wanted to take the opportunity to say thank you to the Veterans and to the men and women serving today.

I also want to thank the families that support the service men and women while they serve. That is a tough job too.

I am proud to be a vet and am proud that my husband is a vet.

There are a lot of vets in each of our families. Some served during wartime and some served during peace time.

They all served for our Freedoms in this country.

We are "One nation under God" after all.

31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?

You shall condemn.

Sunday Song

God is good by Don Moen

God is good!!

God is good all the time
He put a song of praise in this heart of mine
God is good all the time
Through the darkest night, His light will shine
God is good, God is good all the time

If you're walking through the valley
And there are shadows all around
Do not fear, He will guide you
He will keep you safe and sound
'Cause He's promised to never leave you
Nor forsake you and His Word is true

We were sinners - so unworthy
Still for us He chose to die
Filled us with His Holy Spirit
Now we can stand and testify
That His love is everlasting
And His mercies - they will never end

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hebrews 13:5
5 Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”
Acts 13:52
52 And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.
Psalm 145:9
9 The LORD is good to all,And His tender mercies are over all His works.
52 And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.
Heartache
I heard this song today.
Heartache by Bonnie Tyler
It's a heartache
Nothing but a heartache
Hits you when it's too late
Hits you when you're down
It's a fool's game
Nothing but a fool's game
Standing in the cold rain
Feeling like a clown.
It's a heartache
Nothing but a heartache.
Love him till your arms break
Then he lets you down.
It ain't right with love to share
When you find he doesn't care for you.
It ain't wise to need someone
As much as I depended on you.
It's a heartache
Nothing but a heartache
Hits you when it's too late
It ain't right with love to share
Oh it's a heartache
Nothing but a heartache.
Love him till your arms break
Then he let's you down
It's a fool's game
Standing in the cold rain
Feeling like a clown.
It's a heartache
Love him till your arms break
Then he let's you down
It's a heartache
Fireplace Needlepoint
Here's another one.
Notice the basket of yarn!! Those are knitting needles and not a crochet hook though.
I have another needlepoint with a basket of yarn in it too.
Heart--a song
I like this song, I liked it when it first came out in 1976.
More info here
Crazy on you by Heart.
If we still have time
We might still get by
Every time I think about it I want to cry
With bombs and the devil
Little kids keep coming
No way to breathe easy...no time to be young
But I tell myself that I was doing alright
There's nothing left to do tonight but go crazy on you
crazy on you
let me go crazy crazy on you
My love is the evening breeze touching your skin
The gentle sweet singing of leaves in the wind
The whisper that calls after you in the night
And kisses your ear in the early light
And you don't need to wonder, you're doing fine
My love, the pleasure's mine
Let me go crazy on you
crazy on you
let me go crazy crazy on you
Wild man's world is crying in pain
what you gonna do when everybody's insane
So afraid of one who's so afraid of you
what you gonna do oh....
crazy on you, crazy on you, let me go crazy crazy on you
I was a willow last night in my dream
I bent down over a clear running stream
I sang you the song that I heard up above
And you kept me alive with your sweet, flowing love
crazy, yeah, crazy on you
let me go crazy crazy on you
crazy on you
crazy on you
let me go crazy crazy on you, yeah
crazy on you
crazy on you
let me go crazy crazy on you, oh
Arizona Needlepoint
This needlepoint I bought in Phoenix in 1997.
My Husband had to go there for a week on business and I went down for a long weekend.
We went into a shop and he helped me choose this.
It brings back fun memories of our visit.
Sunday Song
Be Unto Your Name
We are a moment, You are forever
Lord of the Ages, God before time
We are a vapor, You are eternal
Love everlasting, reigning on high
Chorus:
Holy, holy, Lord God Almighty
Worthy is the Lamb Who was slain
Highest praises, honor and glory
Be unto Your name, be unto Your name
We are the broken, You are the healer
Jesus, Redeemer, mighty to save
You are the love song we'll sing forever
Bowing before You, blessing Your name
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Revelation 4:8
8 The four living creatures, each having six wings, were full of eyes around and within. And they do not rest day or night, saying:
“ Holy, holy, holy,
Lord God Almighty,
Who was and is and is to come!”

Revelation 5:11-13
11 Then I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels around the throne, the living creatures, and the elders; and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands,
12 saying with a loud voice:
“ Worthy is the Lamb who was slain
To receive power and riches and wisdom,
And strength and honor and glory and blessing!”
13 And every creature which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, I heard saying:
“ Blessing and honor and glory and power
Be to Him who sits on the throne,
And to the Lamb, forever and ever!”

Getting out of Debt

We have decided that we are going to be debt free.

We've been listening to and reading Dave Ramsey and he makes a lot of sense.

Early in our marriage we didn't have much debt. A car payment and mortgage and the occasional credit card debt. We would pay the credit card off each month.

Then my husbands salary increased. We got spoiled. We bought what we wanted when we wanted and it didn't matter if we used the credit card and didn't pay it off. After all, there was always the bonus. We could use the bonus to pay off our debt.

Well, after a few years of that mindset, we find ourselves with more debt than we really want.

There are things we want, things we need to do for the house and we don't want to add more debt to the situation.

So, in the last month or so, we have quit eating out, we have quit the free spending and we've come up with a plan to eradicate our debt in a timely fashion.

We are both excited about this plan too. We are in total agreement with the plan too.

We have completed several steps of Dave Ramsey's plan and are excited to see how this unfolds and how quickly we will be debt free, including mortgage!!

I feel very thankful that my husband makes a good salary. We never should have gotten into this situation to begin with but we did. Now it's time to buckle down and get the debt paid off!!

Here is Dave Ramsey's site.

A song

I have always liked this song though I never really understood it.

Seals and Croft sing it.

They have an interesting history. So I googled and learned a few things about them. They have a bunch of other songs I like too. I heard of them being Baha'i a few years ago.

They are of the Baha'i faith. They reflect their faith in their songs.

Here is the wiki link about Baha'i
Baha'i

In 1973, they wrote a song called "Unborn Child"

It was a reflection of what was happening with Roe vs Wade.

Sadly, I believe it ruined their career.

Here is an interesting link to read about their career and songs.

Seals & Croft

Here is the song Hummingbird.

Oh hummingbird, mankind was waiting for you to come flying along.
Heavenly songbird, we were so wrong. We've harmed you.
Oh hummingbird, lend us your wings. Let us soar in the atmosphere of Abha.
Lift us up to the heaven of holiness, oh source of our being, oh hummingbird.

Hummingbird don't fly away, fly away. Hummingbird don't fly away, fly away.
In you I've found a fragrance. I'll love you 'til I die.
I just love you, love you, love you. I don't even know the reason why.
Hummingbird don't fly away, fly away. Hummingbird don't fly away, fly away.
The sweetness of your nectar has drawn me like a fly.
I just love you, love you, love you. I don't even know the reason why. Now,
Hummingbird don't fly away, fly away. Hummingbird don't fly away, fly away.

Haven't you noticed the days somehow keep getting longer?
And the spirit voices linger in us all.
Haven't you noticed the rays? The spirit sun in stronger
And a new day is dawning on us all.

Hummingbird don't fly away, fly away. Hummingbird don't fly away, fly away.
Hummingbird don't fly away, fly away. Hummingbird don't fly away, fly away.
The draught of understanding; wisdom, peace and love is ours.
Hummingbird don't fly away, fly away. Hummingbird don't fly away, fly away.

Progress!!

The above picture is FIVE inches of a bandage!!!

Flower Needlepoint

This is my favorite Needlepoint.

I really enjoyed working on it and I love how it turned out.

It sat rolled up in tissue paper in my closet til I got married and my husband had it framed for me. It was too expensive for me to frame my needlepoints so I wrapped them and put them in the closet.

Cotton crochet thread

Here are my supplies to make Leprosy bandages. One color is white and the other is natural. I bought a steele hook as well as a regular aluminum hook.

I wonder what the difference is?? I know that when people crochet with thread they generally use a steele hook.

The directions did not specify a hook type.

I will post when I have a bandage completed!!

Hansens Disease

Who knew??

I sure didn't until about 20 years ago. I knew there was leprosy in the world but I had never met anyone with Hansens disease.

I worked at a clinic for 8 years. There was a little old asian woman that would come in monthly for lab work etc.

One day I asked my supervisor why this woman came in so often. My supervisor replied that she had Leprosy--also known as Hansens disease for the man who "found" it.

You could not tell that this woman had this affliction. She had all her limbs and no funny looking skin or anything. And she was just the sweetest person.

Thank God for antibiotics.

Here is the wiki article on Leprosy.
Hansens Disease

So, that brings me to this blog here leprosy bandages

I found this on my crochet board and thought it was something I would like to have a try at.

I have never crocheted with thread but I am having a go at this project.

I will post when I have a bandage done!!

RIP Irene Sendler

This woman was brought to my attention a year or so ago. Some high school girls made a play about her life and even went to visit the woman in Poland.

Today I read in my local paper that she had died.

She was a wonderful woman.

Here is more info on her. And wiki link too.
Irena Sendler (in Polish also: Irena Sendlerowa; February 15, 1910 – May 12, 2008) was a Polish Roman Catholic social worker.

During World War II she was an activist in the Polish Underground and the Żegota Polish anti-Holocaust resistance in Warsaw. She helped save 2,500 Jewish children from the Warsaw Ghetto by providing them false documents and sheltering them in individual and group children's homes outside the Ghetto.

Sunday Song

I will enter his gates with thanksgiving in my heart,
I will enter his courts with praise.
I will say this is the day that the Lord has made,
I will rejoice for He has made me glad.
He has made me glad,
He has made me glad,
I will rejoice for
He has made me glad.
He has made me glad,
I will rejoice for
He has made me glad.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Psalm 118:24
"This is the day which the Lord hath made;
we will rejoice and be glad in it."
Mothers Day Part 2
Priceless!
My little guy made this at school.
Happy Mothers Day!
"Happy Mother's Day" means more
Than have a happy day.
Within those words lie lots of things
We never get to say.
It means I love you first of all,
Then thanks for all you do.
It means you mean a lot to me,
And that I honor you.
But most of all, I guess it means
That I am thinking of
Your happiness on this, your day,
With pleasure and with love.
Dreams I'll Never See
Just one more morning, I have to wake up with the blues
Pull myself outa bed, yeah, pull on my walkin' shoes
Climb up on a hilltop, baby, see what I can see, yeah
The whole world's fallin' down on me, right down in front of me
And I'm hung up upon dreams, I'm never gonna see yet
Lord help me, baby, dreams get the best of me yet
Pull myself together, gonna put on a new face, yeah
Gonna climb down from the hilltop, baby,
Lord, get back in the race
Cause I've got dreams, I've got my dreams
To remember the love we had
I got dreams, yeah I've got my dreams
To remember the love we had
Cause I'm hung up upon dreams, I'm never gonna see yet, not me
Lord, help me baby, dreams get the best of me yet
Alright - yeah yeah
Pull myself together, put on a new face, yeah
Climb down from the hilltop, baby,
Lord, get back in the race
Cause I've got dreams, I've got my dreams
To remember the love we had
I've got dreams, yeah I've got my dreams
To remember the love and peace
And I'm hung up upon dreams, I'm never gonna see yet, not me
Lord, help me baby, dreams get the best of me yet
Isaiah 40:30-31
30 Even the youths shall faint and be weary,
And the young men shall utterly fall,
31 But those who wait on the LORD
Shall renew their strength;
They shall mount up with wings like eagles,
They shall run and not be weary,
They shall walk and not faint.
About those birds.........
There was a segment on the news last night about songbirds dying here recently.
Apparently they have come here too soon and the birds that live on bugs and insects were starving since there were none of those here!
The news said it was mostly bluebirds and bluejays and other birds. It's a shame.
I looked at my 2007 calendar and the hummers did not arrive til the 9th of May last year. That's tomorrow and I don't think they will be here.
My husbands flowering crab tree isn't blooming yet and neither are our lilacs!
Spring is slow to come this year. There are still lakes up north that have ice on them.
I know the birds will recover but it is still sad.
Thankful Thursday
Today I am thankful for:
*my daughter
*friends who understand
*my mom
*internet access
*food grilled outside
Matthew 11:29
29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
Colossians 3:14-16
14 But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection.
15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful.
16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
Women and voting...........
If you are a woman of voting age, read this and vote.
WOW, just WOW.
How Women Got To Vote
A short history lesson on the privilege of voting...
The women were innocent and defenseless. And by the end of the night, they were barely alive. Forty prison guards wielding clubs and their warden's blessing went on a rampage against the 33 women wrongly convicted of "obstructing sidewalk traffic." They beat Lucy Burn, chained her hands to the cell bars above her head and left her hanging for the night, bleeding and gasping for air. They hurled Dora Lewis into a dark cell, smashed her head against an iron bed and knocked her out cold. Her cellmate, Alice Cosu, thought Lewis was dead and suffered a heart attack. Additional affidavits describe the guards grabbing, dragging, beating, choking, slamming, pinching, twisting and kicking the women.
Thus unfolded the "Night of Terror" on Nov. 15, 1917, when the warden at the Occoquan Workhouse in Virginia ordered his guards to teach a lesson to the suffragists imprisoned there because they dared to picket Woodrow Wilson's White House for the right to vote.
For weeks, the women's only water came from an open pail. Their food--all of it colorless slop--was infested with worms. When one of the leaders, Alice Paul, embarked on a hunger strike, they tied her to a chair, forced a tube down her throat and poured liquid into her until she vomited. She was tortured like this for weeks until word was smuggled out to the press.
"Iron Jawed Angels." It is a graphic depiction of the battle these women waged so that I could pull the curtain at the polling booth and have my say. I am ashamed to say I needed the reminder.
HBO will run the movie periodically before releasing it on video and DVD. I wish all history, social studies and government teachers would include the movie in their curriculum. I want it shown on Bunko night, too, and anywhere else women gather. I realize this isn't our usual idea of socializing, but we are not voting in the numbers that we should be, and I think a little shock therapy is in order.
It is jarring to watch Woodrow Wilson and his cronies try to persuade a psychiatrist to declare Alice Paul insane so that she could be permanently institutionalized. And it is inspiring to watch the doctor refuse. Alice Paul was strong, he said, and brave. That didn't make her crazy. The doctor admonished the men: "Courage in women is often mistaken for insanity."
These are some great links to read too.
Hummingbirds..................
They are late this year. I am not surprised. It's been a cool spring and not much is blooming yet.
We have had the feeder up for at least a week.
Sunday Song
Amazing Love
I’m forgiven because You were forsaken
I’m accepted, You were condemned
I’m alive and well, Your Spirit is within me
Because You died and rose again
Amazing love, how can it be
That You, my King, should die for me?
Amazing love, I know it’s true
It’s my joy to honor You
In all I do, to honor You
You are my King
You are my King
Jesus, You are my King
You are my King
John 3:14-21
14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up,
15 that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.
16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
18 “He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
19 And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
20 For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed.
21 But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God.”
Grandma's Needlepoint
This is the needlepoint I made for my Grandma in 1988.
Grandma was here visiting and she chose the picture and I made it.
When it was done she brought it home and framed it and hung it in her house.
When she moved out to my Aunts, I went out to visit and I brought it home.
I know my Grandma had many years of enjoying the picture. We used to laugh because I made several errors in the needlepoint and I used to point out the mistakes and grandma would always say, "no one can see that!", then we would laugh.
I'm glad I have it now. It makes me smile whenever I look at it.
Hummingbird Needlepoint
This is a Hummingbird Needlepoint.
One of the first Hummingbird projects I ever did.
It was completed it 1996. It was the first handpainted canvas I ever worked with and I really enjoyed this project.
Both sides now
I never really knew all the words to this song. An oldie but a goodie!
Both Sides Now
Judy Collins
Bows and flows of angel hair and ice cream castles in the air
And feather canyons everywhere, I've looked at clouds that way
But now they only block the sun they rain and snow on everyone
So many things I would have done, but clouds got in my way
I've looked at clouds from both sides now
From up and down and still somehow
It's cloud's illusions I recall
I really don't know clouds at all
Moons and Junes and ferris wheels the dizzy dancing way you feel
As every fairy tale comes real, I've looked at love that way
But now it's just another show, you leave 'em laughing when you go
And if you care don't let them know, don't give yourself away
I've looked at love from both sides now
From give and take and still somehow
It's love's illusions I recall
I really don't know love at all
Tears and fears and feeling proud, to say, "I love you" right out loud
Dreams and schemes and circus crowds, I've looked at life that way
But now old friends are acting strange they shake their heads, they say
I've changed
But something's lost but something's gained in living every day
I've looked at life from both sides now
From win and lose and still somehow
It's life's illusions I recall
I really don't know life at all
Needlepoint
Other than crocheting, I also needlepoint. I learned at the same time I learned to crochet.
My teachers name was Mrs. Travis and she was a HomeEc teacher. Little, old, blue haired lady. She taught crochet, needlepoint and knitting. Maybe cross stitch too, but I don't remember.
I took a liking to needlepoint and crochet.
This was the sampler I made in 1977. The grade I received for it was an A.
I have lots of needlepoints around my house. I used to do one per year.
They were not framed until I got married and my husband had them framed for me. I used to roll them up in tissue paper and tie them with yarn and there they sat in my closet for years.
I'll post some of those later.
National Day of Prayer
Today is the National day of Prayer. We all need to pray for our nation.
This is for every faith. It was started back in 1775.
In 1952 president Truman signed a bill into law for the National Day of Prayer.
Here are two links that explain this more.
Jeremiah 29:11
11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the LORD, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.
Isaiah 43:1-2
The Redeemer of Israel
1 But now, thus says the LORD, who created you, O Jacob,
And He who formed you, O Israel:
“ Fear not, for I have redeemed you;
I have called you by your name;
You are Mine
2 When you pass through the waters, I will be with you;
And through the rivers, they shall not overflow you.
When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned,
Nor shall the flame scorch you.
Psalm 139:13-15
13 For You formed my inward parts;
You covered me in my mother’s womb.
14 I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
Marvelous are Your works,
And that my soul knows very well.
15 My frame was not hidden from You,
When I was made in secret,
And skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.
